Terms & Conditions

Terms Used

Applicants– organisations, or individuals acting on behalf of organisations, that submit an Application to the Prize.

Application– all collected materials submitted to as part of an entry for the Prize by an Applicant.

Finalists– Applicants that will be invited to present their Applications in front of a live audience at the 2017 MasterCard Foundation Symposium on Financial Inclusion and compete for the US$150,000 award.

Judging Panel– A group of industry experts from The MasterCard Foundation and other organisations (“Judges”) who will evaluate and review all Applications prior to the Symposium.

The Team– All staff members of The MasterCard Foundation’s Clients at the Centre Prize (the “Prize”) and organisations acting on its behalf. 

All Applicants must comply with the following Terms and Conditions to be eligible for The MasterCard Foundation Clients at the Centre Prize. By submitting a completed application for the Prize, applicants agree to be bound by the terms and conditions set out herein.

General Eligibility

  • The MasterCard Foundation reserves the right to make the final determination of an Applicant’s eligibility.
  • The Team, Judges, and employees of The MasterCard Foundation may not apply and may not directly or indirectly have a material interest in any Application.
  • Applicants must be registered organisations that provide access to financial products and services, as defined in the “Applicant Guidelines”.
  • Only organizations, not individuals, are eligible for the Prize.
  • Government ministries, departments or agencies are also not eligible for the Prize.
  • Applicant organisations do not need to be registered or incorporated in one of the listed developing countries, but they must already operate and serve low-income populations in one of those countries. The application to the Prize must also describe how the organisation focuses its operations on low-income population of these countries.
  • Applications that target low-income communities in developed countries are not eligible.
  • Applicant organisations that entered the 2015 and 2016 Prize competitions are eligible to enter again.
  • Partner organisations and those that have received other financial support from The MasterCard Foundation are eligible to apply for the Prize.
  • An Application must meet the following Conditions of Eligibility:
    • The described initiative must demonstrate an innovative and applied focus on client centricity in advancing financial inclusion for low-income populations in developing countries.
    • The described initiative must have an operational presence in one of countries listed here. Eligible countries are low or middle-income developing countries/markets, as listed by both the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook report and the World Bank’s 2016 country group classification.The described initiative must demonstrate potential to scale and its sustainability.
    • The described initiative must have progressed beyond concept stage, demonstrating early evidence of success factors such as new clients, revenues, increased retention, cost reduction, etc.
    • If selected as a Finalist, organisations must be able to provide supplemental information regarding the Application and the organisation if and as requested by the Team.
    • If selected as Finalists, applying organisations must have a senior manager able to attend and present the proposal at The MasterCard Foundation Symposium on Financial Inclusion, to be held in Accra, Ghana, on November 8-9, 2017. Flights directly to and from Accra, ground transportation to and from the venue, and accommodation during the Symposium will be paid in full by The MasterCard Foundation.

Project/Company Status

  • Organisations that have received donor funding (including. but not limited to. investment capital, as well as grant funding for research, technology, or product development) prior to the Application deadline and used this for the business practices submitted/described in the Application must disclose this in their Application.

Content and Intellectual Property

  • All descriptions and content contained in Applications must be the original work of the Applicants.
  • All information contained within all materials entered into The MasterCard Foundation Clients at the Centre Prize must be factual and verifiable by The MasterCard Foundation or its agents or partners.
  • Applicants that rely on intellectual property that has been created or invented or is owned by a third party (“Third-Party IP”) acknowledge that they have obtained permission from any such third party to use the Third-Party IP as a basis to support their Application.
  • It is the responsibility of the Applicant to determine that no third party has any rights on any of the content of the Application that may prevent its use.
  • Plagiarism of any kind, including reproduction of images or other content without reference to the original source, or without permission from the content owner or creator where appropriate, is strictly forbidden. Any images or other content contained in an Applicant’s Application must include all necessary citations or disclosures for the applicant to be eligible.
  • All intellectual property rights, if any, submitted to the Prize will remain with the Applicants.


  • The Team, Judges and employees of The MasterCard Foundation will not enter into non-disclosure agreements with Applicants. Measures will be taken to protect confidentiality of Applications, but Applicants recognise that any information submitted through Applications is at risk of “public disclosure.” Responsibility for precautions and acting accordingly in response to this risk rests with Applicants.


  • All judging decisions made at the discretion of the Judges are final and not subject to appeal.
  • At the Symposium, the Finalists will be judged based on their presentations in front of the audience.
  • The MasterCard Foundation, after consultation with the Judges, reserves the right not to award a prize in the potential event of an absence of suitable Applicants.
  • Should the Judges identify a concern that, in their opinion, causes an Application to violate the Terms and Conditions, they will advise the Team as such. The Team will make the final decision whether to disqualify the entry, based on their best judgment. The decision to disqualify an Applicant rests with the Team alone. The decision made by the Team to disqualify an Applicant is final and is not subject to appeal.


  • Applicants may submit only one Application to the Prize.
  • In the event that an Application is identical or similar to the Application of another Applicant, the Judges reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to either score one Application higher than the other, subject to the Prize guidelines, or to randomly choose an Application from all such identical or similar applications which respond to the Prize guidelines.
  • These Terms and Conditions may be revised periodically by the Team. In the event that they are changed after an  Application has been submitted, but prior to judging, the Team shall communicate the changes to these Terms and Conditions and the Applicant shall have the opportunity to make any changes to his/her submission to ensure compliance with the most recent Terms and Conditions.
  • Communications with Applicants will be by email to the address provided by the Applicant in their Application. The Team is not responsible for the reliability, or otherwise, of email, and no corruption of, defect in, or failure or delay in the delivery of any email communication from the Team will entitle an Applicant to an extension of any deadline or timeframe, or otherwise entitle an Applicant to make any form of claim.
  • By entering, you agree that the Team and its licensees, successors, and assigns have the right to use the names, likenesses, voices, and images of all persons listed in your Application for future advertising, promotion, and publicity in any manner and in any medium now known or hereafter devised throughout the world in perpetuity.
  • Prior to full acceptance of the award, prospective winners will be required to sign a contract with The MasterCard Foundation which will establish guidelines and conditions for the use and reporting of the award. To the extent that these Terms and Conditions conflict with the contractual agreement, the contractual agreement will take precedence.
  • The Prize is limited to specific project activities. The prize money and consulting support cannot be used towards direct payments of support to individuals, establishment of permanent endowment, trust, or other fund for which the corpus is intended to be preserved and only the earnings of which would be utilized for current projects, purchases of land or buildings, establishment or funding of permanent or revolving loan funds, purchase of program related investments or other equity interests in charitable projects, attendance at fundraising events, dues to commerce and trade associations, funds to support sports groups, any expenditure for political, lobbying, and other fraternal activities, any expenditure of a purely religious manner.
  • The Team shall not be liable to the Applicant for any damages, claims, expenses or other costs (including without limitation, reasonable attorney’s fees) that the Applicant may suffer or incur as a result of participation in this Prize, or arising out of any information provided by the Team or any decision made by the Team in connection with this Prize. Under no circumstances will the Team be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, punitive or consequential damages or for any damages arising from the Applicant’s participation in the Prize competition in any manner.
  • Failure to comply with these Terms and Conditions, or to accurately make any disclosures required by The MasterCard Foundation Clients at the Centre Prize, as determined at the sole discretion of the Team, may result in disqualification from the Prize and/or the requirement that any awards be forfeited and/or returned immediately.
